We offer two art history survey courses that introduce you to the history and development of western art:
- ARHI 201: A Survey of Western Art I examines artistic expression from prehistoric times through to the fifteenth century.
- ARHI 202: A Survey of Western Art II begins with the Renaissance and takes you to the present day.
Our newest course, ARHI 301: Canadian Visual Culture, reexamines Canadian art history in light of contemporary scholarship and the multidisciplinary meanings of culture.
Our courses present art as an expression of the social and political forces of the times in which it was created. You learn to view art from many different aspects: why it was created, what function it served, and why the particular medium was chosen, to name a few. We hope you will enjoy these courses whether you are taking them to fulfill your degree requirements at AU or another university, for professional reasons, or out of personal interest.
